Tomatillos

Now appearing in our weekly Veggie box and Half & Half box are tomatillos (Physalis philadelphica & Physalis ixocarpa) What appears to be a small tomato, hiding in a green husk.

Also known as the Mexican husk tomato, the tomatillo is a plant of the nightshade family (tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, potatoes and tobacco are all cousins) bearing small, spherical and green or green-purple fruit of the same name. Tomatillos originated in Mexico and were cultivated in the pre-Columbian era.

Uses of the tart green or purple fruit, include grilling, broiling, and making salsa verde (green salsa).
